Another day in Paradise

KIITOS FINLAND

Haukij√§rvi, Finland…

In the great expansive Finnish countryside is Arteles Creative Center. This place is magical, spiritual and full of creative inspiration. My month long residency in Finland has fueled new motivations to create and foster creative community. I had no intentions for any specific projects while I was there, and this led to an absolute freedom to create. In my opinion, to create with no intention is art within its purest form of expression.

I spent the first two weeks getting acquainted to my new surroundings and people (and overcoming jet lag). I drew, wrote and sent postcards to friends during those weeks. Each day led to a new discovery of the creative process. I let the moment of any given experience guide me as I created sound works and composed musical scores that were never played. I also found great community in one simple act… cooking. The kitchen brings us together, and for the entire month food became the pinnacle moment of getting to know new people from new places. Truth is, I spent most of the month cooking.

I went for long walks in solitude and I recorded the sounds of silence. I took refuge in the traditional Finnish sauna and traveled a bit here and there. Kiitos is the Finnish word for thank you, and the only Finnish I learned while I was there. No other word can sum up the experiences more than this simple word.

KIITOS dear Finland! KIITOS!
